The Sundre-based Mountainview Taekwondo club is celebrating its 20th year.
The club, consisting of about 30 members aged four and up, scored several medals during tournaments last month.
On March 9, the club went to Red Deer to participate in the Adams Tournament, where members brought home five gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals, said Cherie Johnson, vice-president of the non-profit Mountainview Taekwondo Society.
The 18th Annual Victory Tournament of Champions in Calgary on March 23 resulted in club members bringing home six gold, two bronze and three silver medals.
Also, a few club members participated in the Alberta 2013 Open Tournament in Edmonton, also on March 23, where they brought home four bronze medals.
Johnson said she is proud of the club's accomplishments and that they are now preparing for a belt testing in May.
The club is also participating in the Sundre parade in June, she said.
In October, they will host the club's 20th annual taekwondo tournament at Sundre High School.
The club's season runs from September to May and anyone is welcome to join, she said.
Her two sons, ages five and seven, along with her 35-year-old husband are all part of the club.
“We're really supportive of everybody,” she said.
Being in a small town allows for a more “personable” atmosphere, she said.
“It's wonderful for promoting self-esteem and it's great for self- defence and anti-bullying,” she said.
“They learn different techniques to deal with these things.”
She said the club members enjoy having the opportunity to travel around the province and meet new people along the way.
“Health and fitness is very important for children and adults,” she said.
“We have three young teenagers that just got their black belt in December. It gives encouragement for the younger kids.”
