DIDSBURY – The Didsbury 5-0 Floor Curling Club played host to the Big Country Zone 2 floor curling qualifying bonspiel for the Alberta 55 plus games.

In the 55 plus category, the Didsbury team consisting of Dave Neustaeter, Nettie Neustaeter, Carol Fuller and Wayne Moench came first and qualified for the Alberta 55 plus games, which will be held May 18-20 in Camrose. Coming second was a team from Airdrie, while Strathmore finished third.

Nettie Neustaeter said the event went well and the organizers received many compliments on the facility.

“The executive of the Big Country Senior Sports Society – zone 2 of Alberta 55 plus, were impressed that there was floor shuffleboard downstairs and a large field outside where possibly a bocce tournament could be held in the summer, or all three for that matter,” said Nettie.

“An excellent lunch was provided by Country Nook. A few spectators showed up to cheer on the Okotoks team and were very excited when they won first place. Everyone had a great time.”

In the 70 plus category, the Okotoks team came in first and will advance to the Alberta 55 plus games. Airdrie finished second, while Didsbury placed third.

“The first- and second-place teams in the 70 plus category were tied after eight ends of play, so they played another four-end game and still came up tied,” said Nettie. “They then did a draw to the button which determined that the Okotoks team won. That made for a lot of excitement at the end.”
