The Olds Peewee female Thunder were among four local hockey teams that competed in provincial championships over the weekend. The Thunder lost in the final of the tournament, in Red Deer, 3-1 to Lamond.
The Thunder opened the tournament on Thursday with a 7-0 blanking of the Calgary Avalanche, then followed that up with a 11-2 triumph over Fairview. The Thunder then beat Lamond 3-1 and Ponoka 9-1. The Thunder advanced to the final with a 3-1 victory over Lloydminster.
The Olds Bantam Renegades finished with a 3-2 record at the Bantam B female provincials in Viking. The Renegades beat the Calgary Fury 8-1 to open the tournament on Thursday, then followed that with a 8-0 whitewash of the Beaverlodge Lightening. The Renegades then came out with a 6-1 victory over the Strathmore Storm before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Provost Blades. The Renegades lost in one semi-final 2-1 to the Lloydminster Blazers.
Meanwhile, the Olds Bantam Chiefs finished with a 2-2 record at the Bantam AA provincials in Lacombe. The Chiefs opened the tournament by dispatching the Sylvan Lake Lakers on Friday 5-4 before dropping their next contest 5-2 to the Okotoks Oilers. The Chiefs beat Grande Prairie Happy Trails RV 5-4 before losing in one semi-final 6-3 to the Strathmore Warriors.
Rounding out the weekend, the Olds Thunder finished with an 0-3-1 record at the Atom girls provincials in Grande Prairie. The team lost 3-1 to the Calgary Red Hot Chili Peppers, 8-1 to the Lloydminster Blazers and 4-0 to the Red Deer Devils. The team finished the tournament by battling the Fort McMurray Junior Oil Barons to a 4-4 draw.
