The Innisfail Minor Softball league is hosting its fourth annual tournament this weekend and expect 30 participating teams.
“The farthest team is coming all the way from Elkford, B.C.,” said Rick Blais, league liaison. He said last year the league estimated about 3,000 people came into Innisfail over the weekend when 35 teams signed up.
Blais said this year they capped numbers at 30 teams because it makes it easier to deal with if it rains. Last year the tournament was cancelled as early as Saturday afternoon because of rainout.
The tournament kicks off Friday night and will run till early evening Sunday. Games will be played at both the ball diamonds at the pool and the ones outside of the arena. Mites, squirts, peewees and bantams will play.
Blais said the teams are excited for a tough weekend. Recently the peewees placed gold at a tournament in Lacombe over the May 28 weekend. They also placed bronze over the June 1 weekend in Stettler. Peewees will play at the provincial D level July 13 to 15.
