CARSTAIRS -- A pair of Hugh Sutherland School (HSS) students did well at the recent Alberta High School Track and Field Championships at Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary.
HSS coach Jenny Johnson said both athletes performed very well and represented their school and town admirably at provincials.
Aiden Good took home a bronze medal for finishing third in the 800 metre with a personal best time of 1:56:58.
"Honestly, it was so close it looked like a three-way tie for first," said Johnson.
Good also placed seventh in the 400 metre final with a time of 52.65. Tanner Austin finished seventh in the triple jump and 10th in the long jump.
"I'm super proud of these athletes who are also dedicated students and outstanding people," said Johnson.
Good, who is in Grade 11, qualified for provincials after finishing first in both the 400m and 800m at the South Central zone qualifying tournament held in Calgary earlier in the month.
Austin qualified by finishing first in long jump and second in triple jump at zones.
Good told the Gazette he was pleased with his results at provincials.
"I felt pretty good," said Good. "It was pretty rainy on the Friday when I got bronze in the 400. It actually snowed a little. So I was pretty happy with that performance."
Good said he was a few seconds off his personal best in the 800 the following day.
"Had I ran my personal best I could've placed fourth," he said. "It was a little disappointing thinking I could've placed higher but I was still happy being that close to my best time. I ran a decent race strategically. All in all, I was happy with the weekend."
Good, who trains with the Airdrie Aces track club in the off-season, won gold in the cross-country provincial championships back in October.
Also finishing in the top 10 at zones for HSS were: Sophie Porter, sixth in 3,000m; Tiana Allison, seventh in hurdles; and Aidan McDonald, sixth in both shot and javelin.
