OLDS — The Olds College Broncos women’s hockey team was beaten 4-2 by the SAIT Trojans during the Broncos’ last home game of the season.
Karli Frederick opened the scoring for the Broncos with a power-play goal at 11:30 of the first period, assisted by Maddy Black and Jesse Jack.
The Trojans evened the score on a power-play goal of their own at 16:07.
However, the Broncos restored their lead with a goal by Kali Cummings from Maddy Black at 17:34.
The first period finished with the Broncos leading the Trojans 2-1.
The Trojans slightly outshot the Broncos 10-9 in that first frame.
At 8:44 of the second period, the Trojans scored to tie the game at 2-2.
At 15:45, Broncos goaltender Lexi Bruce came out to stop an exciting breakaway attempt by Trojan Kelsey Patterson.
Bruce got strong backing from her defence to block a scoring attempt on the wide open net.
After two periods, the score remained knotted at 2-2.
Shots on goal after 40 minutes were 23-18 for the Trojans.
In the third period, it was Trojan goaltender Kaylin Schellenberg’s turn to stop a big breakaway.
She foiled Broncos forward Bree Edwards at the eight-minute mark.
Midway through the third period, the Trojans took the lead after Jack took a high-sticking penalty and Kassy Gaudette was sent to the box for boarding, resulting in a five-on-three SAIT power play.
Late in the game, the Broncos called a time out after a couple of SAIT players were penalized for body contact and tripping.
At 17:22, Bruce was pulled out of the net, giving the Broncos another skater in an effort to tie the score.
However, at 19:59, SAIT’s Kelsey Patterson scored an empty-netter to seal the win.
Final shots for the night were 39-26 for the Trojans.
