Olds College has beefed up its women's volleyball team with a couple of recruits from Saskatchewan.
They are Emily Zaleschuk of Wakaw and Janeen Pellatt of Yorkton.
Zaleschuk, who is 5 - 8 tall, plays the right side and is enrolled in the college's animal health technology program.
She has played on teams that have won 3A high school provincials as well as those that have won tier two gold and silver medals in club volleyball, Sask Cup and provincial tournaments.
Zaleschuk also competes in other sports. She placed third in badminton Regionals and received the Ken Holinaty Senior Athlete of the Year award.
Zaleschuk is looking forward to the year ahead.
“There are new challenges that are going to be faced, new people and coaches to meet with and most importantly friends to be made along with the program that is offered, ” she says.
Head coach Ryan Marsden says Zaleschuk is a "highly competitive and humble volleyball player. Works hard and loves to win. Not only good at attacking the ball, but also receiving and defending it.”
Pellatt stands 6 - 1 and plays the middle.
She's enrolled in the college's sports management program.
In 2015-16, Pellatt was the volleyball rookie of the year at her high school. She was named MVP in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Her team won tier two gold at Nationals in 2018.
Pellatt is looking forward to being a Bronco this year.
“The Broncos are part of a highly competitive league and will offer me the chance to grow as an athlete," she says.
"I’m excited to push my limits with the help of new coaches and trainers. I am looking forward to becoming a part of and contributing to a skilled, dedicated, and hard-working team.”
Marsden describes Pellatt as a "fantastic middle blocker that moves well to the outsides."
"(She) has very good court sense and is quick as a 6 - 1 athlete," he adds. "She has natural leadership skills and will step in and help the program immediately.”
