The U-14 girls soccer team from Olds made it a clean sweep in Big Country Soccer Association play this season, defeating Carstairs 2-0 in the final to claim gold at the championships on Saturday.
The team will now go on to the provincial championships in Beaumont from July 6 to 8.
David Higginbottom, the team's coach and also the president of the Olds Minor Soccer Association, said the team played excellent defence against a determined Carstairs team, winning the game 2-0.
“It was a hard game. Carstairs really brought it. There was certainly no slackers,” he said.
Higginbottom said the championship capped off an excellent undefeated 8-0 season. Victors are only allowed to count a five-goal victory even if the actual score of the games was more lopsided.
In eight games, the U-14 squad outscored the opposition by 37 goals.
“It was a perfect season. It was awesome. There was only two games where we didn't beat the other team by five goals,” Higginbottom said, adding that the team is now looking forward to provincials to cap off the year.
Other Olds teams that competed at the BCSA championships on Saturday included the U-16 boys team claiming silver, the U-14 boys claiming bronze and the U-16 girls team claiming bronze.
Both the U-12 boys and girls teams will play their championship games in Didsbury on Saturday. Both those teams are undefeated so far this season, with final regular season games scheduled for Wednesday.
