The Olds College Broncos women’s hockey team has added some versatility to the lineup, recruiting Ontario Hockey Academy product Brianna Marsh for the 2019-20 season.
Originally from Alder Point, N.S., Marsh has played the last three seasons in Cornwall, Ont., with the Ontario Hockey Academy Mavericks, where she has played both forward and on defence.
The 5-5 Marsh will enter the veterinary medical receptionist program this fall.
“Olds College appealed to me because it had programs I was interested in,” she said. “Also, the location is a big difference to where I live and I would love to see it.”
Broncos head coach Chris Leeming is excited about the prospect of adding Marsh.
“Brianna is a welcomed addition to our roster due to the fact that she possesses the unique capacity to have an impact on both sides of the puck, as either a forward or a defenceman,” he said. “This stems from her strong hockey IQ which allows her to read the play and make good decisions, both with and without the puck.
“More importantly, with Brianna we add another quality character and leadership piece to our team that will have a significant impact on our team’s overall culture.”
In addition to her skill on the ice, Marsh is also strong in the classroom, having earned honour roll status throughout her junior high and high school time.
She is also involved in the community, volunteering with such initiatives as the Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle campaign, Rocking Horse Ranch and Rehabilitation Centre, as well as with local minor hockey programs and food banks.
Marsh cites her positive attitude and strong skating as her best qualities as a player, while adding that getting used to the speed of the game will be the biggest adjustment she needs to make in transitioning to ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) hockey.
However, Marsh believes her willingness to play anywhere in the lineup will help her contribute to Olds College’s success the most.
“I think my versatility can be very helpful to the Broncos because if they need a forward or defenceman, I can fill in,” she said. “Also, I can switch my tactics, depending on what the team needs.”
Marsh is looking forward to getting going with Olds College this fall.
“I think people can expect to see the Broncos come out stronger this season and be very successful,” she said.
The Broncos will open their regular season on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. against the Red Deer College Queens at the Olds Sportsplex.
