The Sundre High School Scorpions boys' and girls’ senior volleyball squads recently got back on the court.

“Both teams are doing very well so far this season,” said Ashley Bellamy, the school’s athletic director.

“The boys won their first home games and the girls only lost by a couple of points,” she added.

Both of the senior teams — there’s also one junior varsity boys' as well as a junior varsity girls' team — played in tournaments last weekend. The girls were in Carstairs and played well “considering the fact that they only had five girls on the court for a couple of games on Saturday,” she said.

“As for the boys, they also did wonderful and represented Sundre High very well.”

When asked where the teams have shown improvement and what the focus is during practice, she said, “all of the teams have different strengths, so it is hard to pinpoint this question.”

The senior girls will be competing in another tournament at Ecole Olds High School Oct. 18-19, and again at Trochu Valley School the following weekend Oct. 25-26.

The senior boys, a mix of grade 10-12 students, recently competed in a tournament in Rocky Mountain House but had to withdraw after winning their first playoff match due to about half of the team being absent for hockey tryouts, said coach Kevin Challoner. The boys, he added, won their first league match against Didsbury and have another tournament coming up this weekend in Cremona with one more lined up in Trochu in early November.

"We're missing our big middle blocker due to an injury, but we still expect to have a competitive team," said Challoner.
