The volleyball season at Sundre High School (SHS) is well underway, with three active teams this year.
There is a junior varsity girls team, a senior girls team and a senior boys team.
“This year there are only three teams in our league: Sundre, Cremona and Olds Koinonia. I believe the girls have the usual five team league: Sundre, Olds Koinonia, Cremona, Carstairs and Didsbury,” explained Nicola Smith, coach of the senior boys team.
“The boys are having their best year ever. They are undefeated in the league play so far,” she said.
The team has two home games left before playoffs, one on Oct. 23 and one on Oct. 30. The volleyball season at SHS started in September and goes until mid-November.
“The number of teams we play against varies from year to year, especially with the boys, as we compete against football, lacrosse and hockey for players,” she said.
Ashley Bellamy coaches the senior girls team and Kevin Challoner coaches the junior varsity girls. The seniors practise three nights a week pre-season and two nights a week once the league starts.
“Volleyball is a lifelong sport. You can play it recreationally on the beach, at family gatherings, even in Africa! I taught/coached at every school we visited while I was there (in July). Even I still play recreationally,” she said.
“I coach because I love the game. The boys I am working with now started with me in Grade 6. This is their graduating year and my last year of coaching.”
