Donning fake moustaches in support of the Movember campaign to raise money for prostate cancer research, the Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team took to the court on the evening of Nov. 14 with huge smiles and radiating energy.
But a disastrous first set against the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Trojans where the Broncos were knocked down 25-11 quickly dampened the mood for the home team.
The second set started off just as bad for the Broncos until the squad finally took their first lead of the match halfway through the frame and edged out the Trojans 25-20 to even the match at one set each.
In the third set, the squad blew a six-point lead to give the Trojans a 25-23 win but the Broncos stabilized their game enough to win the fourth set 25-19 and the fifth set 15-8 for a match win of three sets to two.
The men's team put up little resistance to the Trojans as SAIT won three sets to nil the same evening.
The matches were the last games of the year on the court at the Ralph Klein Centre as the floor is now being replaced.
The Broncos' away games against the Trojans on Nov. 16 were cancelled due to poor road conditions.
The men's team is in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference basement with a record of 0-6. The women's team's record is 4-2.
