Thanks to a massive home win over the Grande Prairie Wolves on Feb. 22, the Olds College Broncos women's basketball team is heading to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conferences finals for the first time ever.
After losing to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology on Feb. 16, the Broncos' playoff chances were in jeopardy and the team was forced to play in a wildcard qualifying tournament in Olds from February 22 to 24.
The team clinched on Feb. 22 with a 99-49 blowout against the Wolves.
The following night, the Broncos took on the Concordia Thunder in a battle for seventh place in the conference, a placing that would give them a better seed in the championships.
Again, the Broncos took a healthy, early lead and maintained it throughout the game, beating Concordia 76-60.
Concordia, however, also clinched a spot in the playoffs, which begin on Feb. 28 at Augustana University College.
The Broncos' first game is against Red Deer College on the evening of Feb. 28.
Broncos guard Jerri-lyn Chisholm, who is in her final year at the college, said the championships "will be a battle,î but coach Reg Carrick has pushed the team to be ready for the challenge.
"We've been through a lot this season altogether,î she said. "At Christmastime we had some stuff go on and we've come together as a team. We believe in each other, we believe in ourselves.î
