The Olds College Broncos women’s soccer team defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 4-1 in the Broncos home opener Sunday, Sept. 15 to continue the team's winning streak (4-0 in ACAC play).

The festivities at the Broncos home opener began before kickoff, with a special ribbon cutting presentation for the official naming of Richardson Pioneer Field.

After announcing the whole Broncos women’s soccer team, both teams went back and forth trading chances before Broncos team captain Katie Oeltermann scored on a penalty shot. The penalty shot was awarded after a hand ball was called off of a great Paige Whitehead corner kick.

Shots at halftime were 18-7 for Olds with shots on goal 13-5 for the Broncos and Olds had the only three corner kicks.

There was some fun halftime entertainment sponsored by Richardson Pioneer and Boston Pizza with several spectators entering the field to take part.

After keeping Augustana within striking distance for the first half, the Broncos were finally able to break through Viking goalie Kristi Bignell early in the second half.

Less than two minutes into the half, Felicia Rodney sent a beautiful cross to rookie Hailey Petterson who easily redirected the ball into an empty net for her second goal in as many games.

Less than eight minutes later Rodney took a feed from Jayna Espie-Sanderson as she ran to the net and powered the ball through Bignell and a defender and into the net for Rodney’s ACAC leading seventh goal of the season.

With 20 minutes left in the game, Cassidy Haynes was substituted into the game and rewarded her coach by scoring three minutes later when a ball from Mackenzie Mohr got through the Augustana defenders and she beat the goalie to the ball and deposited the ball into the gaping net.

Augustana was able to ruin the clean sheet with less than five minutes left with a goal by Demi Vermeer, assisted by Jessica Lalonde.

Players of the game were presented by Richardson Pioneer employee and Olds College alumni Debbie Iverson and Peggy Fulkerton.

Fulkerton is also a Broncos women's volleyball alumnus. Player of the Game for Augustana was Sydnee Dallyn and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was defender Kathleen Andres.

Shots were 24-24 with Olds goalie Jewels Hallock and Augustana’s Bignell each making 13 saves.
