An Amber Alert issued yesterday evening for a two-year-old boy police say was abducted by his mother from Calgary was cancelled last night after the pair were located.
“We have safely located Hawkin Gerald Thomas, 2, and his mother Tamara Jean Vanderjagt, 40,” Calgary Police Service notified the public through social media posts, hours after the Amber Alert was issued.
“Throughout this incident, more than 70 Calgary Police Service members were actively involved in the search for Hawkin and his mother. Resources were called in from all across the Service including patrol members, covert resources, tactical officers, and crisis negotiators, which ultimately led investigators to safely locate the mother and son,” states a press release issued last night by Calgary Police Service.
The Calgary Police Service’s Domestic Violence Team is continuing to investigate the incident.
An Amber Alert was issued around 6 p.m. on Jan. 27 after two-year-old after police said Thomas was abducted by his mother earlier in the afternoon from the Inglewood area.
The alert was broadcast on the provincial government’s Alberta Emergency Alert system and was issued for the area encompassing just north of Edmonton, south to the United States border, west to the British Columbia border and east to the Saskatchewan border.
Amber Alert broadcasts ask for tips to help find an abducted child or an adult with a proven mental or physical disability or someone or who is at risk of harm. It also gives details about the child or adult.
Following a supervised visitation with his mother, the Calgary Police Service said Hawkin was abducted on Thursday, Jan. 27, at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of 9 Avenue S.E. in Calgary.
“Multiple resources have been searching the city, however, have not been able to locate Hawkin or his mother, and we are concerned for his welfare,” police said in a press release issued when the Amber Alert was broadcast.
Thomas is described as white, with long blond hair, and was last seen wearing a red sweater, green boots and dark camouflage sweatpants.
Vanderjagt, his mother, is described as white, standing five-feet, four-inches tall, with a slim build, short bright red hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a black hoodie and red pants.
Vanderjagt was believed to be travelling in a brown 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander, with Alberta licence plate NLY 991, and was last seen westbound on 9 Avenue S.E., going past Blackfoot Trail.
