MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - The county has upgraded the fire restriction it put in place on Monday to a fire ban effective immediately, officials said Wednesday morning.

“Due to ongoing dry conditions, as well as the MD Bighorn wildfire currently occurring 20 kilometres west of Water Valley that may require additional support form our local fire departments, the fire restriction currently in place is upgraded to a fire ban throughout the county,” said chief operating officer Jeff Holmes.

The fire ban includes the cancellation of all existing fire and firework permits, with no new permits being issued until the ban is lifted.

Under Section 14 of the Mountain View County fire bylaw, the following restrictions are now in place:

• No fire permits shall be issued,

• No fireworks permits shall be issued.

• All existing fire permits are suspended.

• No person shall ignite a fire regardless of exemption status except for barbecues, internal household fireplaces and Alberta Energy Regulator flaring.

• Every person shall immediately extinguish any fire lit once the person knows or ought to reasonably know of the fire ban.

• No person shall discharge fireworks.

The county's fire ban does not extend to the urban municipalities located within its geographical borders.
