Canada Day activities aplenty planned across district

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Towns and villages across the county and Innisfail plan to host a great variety of Canada Day activities to celebrate the nation’s 156th birthday, say officials.

OLDS

In Olds, festivities get underway with fireworks which will be set off Friday, June 30 at the Rotary Athletic Park.  

On Saturday, celebrations begin with the parade winding in a loop along through Uptowne and area, stopping just west of the Sportsplex.

Also starting at 11 a.m. lots of activities will be held in Centennial Park, including magic shows, entertainment by Girl Crush as well as games and other activities. 

SUNDRE

In Sundre, the Sundre & District Museum’s historic pioneer village opens at no cost to the public at 10 a.m. Shortly after the flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m. will be the free barbecue hosted by members of council. Other activities will include kids’ games, a market at the Sundre Elks Lodge from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., a car show put on by the West Country Cruisers, and live music by Tim Hus. 

Wagons West RV Park plans to host a live pro wrestling fundraising event in the evening, and then a fireworks display is tentatively going ahead at the Sundre Rodeo Grounds at dusk depending on conditions.

INNISFAIL

Innisfail kicks off its Canada Day celebrations with its traditional fireworks display on June 30 outside the Innisfail Twin Arena, weather permitting. 

On the morning of July 1, the celebration continues with a pancake breakfast and entertainment at the Innisfail and District Historical Village. 

In the afternoon, Canada Day celebrations move over to Centennial Park, where from 4 to 11 p.m., the public can enjoy a day of live performances, food trucks, a barbecue and beer garden.  

There will also be a family area that will have yard games, an inflatable obstacle course, a bounce house and a photo-booth. 

CREMONA

In Cremona, there is the pancake breakfast, a baseball tourney, bouncy house and obstacle course for kids, the parade starting at 10:30.

There are also activities at the Cremona Library, pickleball at the community hall, and a concert at the hall followed by fireworks at the ball diamond.

DIDSBURY

In Didsbury, many of the Canada Day activities are focused at the Didsbury Museum (2110 - 21 Ave.), including exhibits, games and performances. There will be an ice cream social starting at 2 p.m., and a model railway demonstration.

There will be a kids bike parade at the Rosebud Campground at 11 a.m., and free swimming complements of the Town of Didsbury at the Aquatic Centre from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. And there will be fireworks at dusk.

CARSTAIRS

In Carstairs activities planned included the bike parade, games and other events at the Memorial Park starting at 11:30 a.m. There will also be activities at the Carstairs Legion starting at 11 a.m.

As well, Canada Day fireworks will be held at the Carstairs Golf Course, with parking at the course and across Highway 2A in the open field.
