MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – County council has directed administration to plan and schedule a teleconference town hall regarding flood protection of the Coal Camp hamlet west of Sundre.

The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

Earlier this year council directed operational service to send a request to Alberta Environment and Parks to reallocate provincial FREC (recovery erosion control program) funding remaining from the Rge. Rd. 55 and Rge. Rd. 60 projects to the protection of the hamlet, which lies near the Red Deer River.

Adminstration recently received permission from the province to reallocate the funds for the project.

The intention of the project is to undertake bank protection along the river, including the adding of engineered stability structures, to prevent erosion of the riverbank and prevent flooding, council heard.

The project would be to protect public infrastructure at the site and not private homes, said Coun. Angela Aalbers.

“I think an important part of this communication is this project is actually to protect the county infrastructure, which is the road network that is in there and which we are responsible for,” said Aalbers.

During the Oct. 7 council meeting council instructed administration to undertake a mail-out of information about the proposed project to landowners before the town hall.

“Following feedback received from the open house, operational services would proceed with the design, and plan for construction in 2021,” administration said in a briefing note to council.

A time for the teleconference town hall will be announced in the coming weeks, council heard.
