MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - In a sure sign of spring, the first sign of an active grizzly bear has been seen in the district following the winter hibernation, says Mountain View BearSmart Society.
“Footprints of a grizzly bear were seen in the snow south of Water Valley in the Winchell Lake area on April 1,” said Jane Bicknell, secretary of the society.
“The weather has been switching between snowstorms and spring melt this past month and there is very little natural food available to bears, so remember, if you don’t want a bear in your yard then don’t provide it with a meal.”
When travelling in the area, residents and visitors are reminded to be ever vigilant and carry bear spray at all times.
Area residents are also reminded to ensure their outdoor properties are free of bear attractants such as bird feeders, spilled grain, bee hives, and deadstock, she said.
