MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY — Council has approved a land use bylaw amendment to allow to the creation of a cemetery at the Hutterian Brethren Church of Valleyview property in the county’s northeast.
The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting, held in person and through Zoom.
The amendment changes a two-acre parcel (SW 10-33-27-4) about 20 kilometres northeast of the Town of Olds from agricultural district to institutional, educational and culture district.
“This proposal is for the creation of an undeveloped parcel for the future development of a cemetery to be used by the members of the Hutterite community,” administration said in a briefing note to council.
“As a result of the circulation from Service Alberta the applicant met with administration and as a result, the application was amended to include subdivision as a cemetery, among other registration requirements needed to have its own title.”
The proposed parcel was relocated to be situated adjacent to the developed county road to ensure legal and physical access can be obtained, to exclude any existing pipelines as well as to minimize any potential impact on agricultural activity on the remainder, council heard.
The circulation of the application to adjacent landowners and Alberta Transportation resulted in no concerns or objections.
Administration supported the application, saying the proposal complies with the policies of the municipal development plan being the first parcel removed from an unsubdivided quarter and that the land is suitable for the intended use.
Coun. Jennifer Lutz, whose Division 7 includes the land involved, said she consulted neighbours and was in support of the application.
Council approved second and third reading of the application. Coun. Dwayne Fulton was not present for the vote.
