MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Mountain View County council has approved updates to the Mountain View County procedure regarding reeve, deputy reeve and councillor remuneration, including that the reeve’s remuneration be increased by $1,325 over four years for the council elected in October 2025.

The move came by way of motions at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting, held in person and online.

County Policy #1004 requires a compensation review be conducted every four years to compare existing Mountain View County (MVC) remuneration rates with comparable municipalities.

In September council instructed administration to undertake a compensation review of remunerations levels in comparable municipalities.

The review looked at remuneration rates at Leduc, Lacombe, Sturgeon, Red Deer, Clearwater, Wetaskiwin, Foothills and Kneehill counties.

Following the review, administration recommended that the MVC reeve remuneration be increased by $2,650 (a 1.75 per cent increase) and councillor remuneration be increased by $11,809 (a 13.26 per cent increase), both over four years.

At the Nov. 27 council meeting, deputy reeve Dwayne Fulton put forward a motion that “council request that Procedure #1004 - 01 be updated to reflect a reeve base rate increase of $1,325 spread over four year effective for the 2025-2029 council term.”

That motion passed, with reeve Angela Aalbers, deputy reeve Fulton, councillors Tiffany Nixon, Alan Miller, Greg Harris voting for, and councillors Jennifer Lutz and Peggy Johnson voting against.

Fulton put forward a second motion that council update the procedure to reflect a councillor base rate increase of $5,900 over four years for the 2025-2029 council term.”

That motion also passed, with Aalbers, Fulton, Nixon, Miller and Harris voting for, and Lutz and Johnson voting against.

A third motion calling for the procedure to be updated to reflect the deputy reeve position receive a base rate 12.5 per cent greater than the councillor base rate, effective for the 2025-2029 council term was carried unanimously.

The base rate remuneration for the current term reeve is $75,762.92 and for the current term councillors $44,534.79

Following the votes, Coun. Lutz put forward a motion, “That council direct administration to return information and reasoning on the current list of comparable municipalities for council’s review and consideration.”

Prior to the vote, Lutz said, “I’m feeling that the comparatives aren’t reflective of activity that takes place in Mountain View County.”

That motion was defeated, with Aalbers, Harris, Miller and Fulton voting against, and Nixon, Lutz and Johnson voting in favour.

The council elected in 2025 could vote to change the remuneration and compensation procedure and policy.
