MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County councillors Angela Aalbers and Al Kemmere will be meeting with Olds College officials to discuss the possibility of a joint project relative to the recycling of agricultural plastics into usable products.
At the recent Economic Developers of Alberta Conference, it was discussed that in support of MVC’s strategic goals surrounding environmental and agricultural priorities that it may be beneficial to pursue a conversation and potential partnership with Olds College, said Chris Atchison, the county's director of legislative services during the July 14 council meeting.
Coun. Aalbers said working with the college to prompt agricultural plastic recycling could be mutually beneficial.
“I think it would be worth it for us to have a meeting with them, and get our economic development officer involved with this as well, just to get any idea as to whether or not the college would be interested in supporting an opportunity to look into this,” said Aalbers.
“I think this give us an opportunity. We are already involved with the ag recycling side of things, so I think this gives us an opportunity to have an open dialogue to see if we can come up with some sort of a project we could be involved in.”
Coun. Kemmere said exploring the possibility of working with the college on ag plastic recycling would be mutually beneficial.
“It’s worth talking to them about this,” said Kemmere. “These are the kinds of ideas that start at the grassroots.”
Councillors passed a motion directing administration to arrange a meeting with Olds College officials.
“If it takes off I think it’s a huge win for Mountain View County to show that we are actually part of the solution. I’m excited about it,” said Aalbers.
All councillors attended the July 14 council meeting.
