MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Earl Dreeshen, Conservative Member of Parliament for Red Deer-Mountain View, has responded to the removal of Erin O’Toole as party leader on Wednesday.
In a release issued several hours after Conservative MPs voted to remove O’Toole on Feb. 2, Dreeshen called the removal a “difficult decision.”
In his statement, Dreeshen said, in part: “As one door closes another opens, and we must now work to rebuild the trust among each other while remaining rooted in our values and committed to listening to all Canadians. We must continue to be relentless in our quest to unite ourselves and heal both our party and our country.”
Dreeshen said he has heard from constituents “expressing how important it is for us to be a united party that stands up for their rights and concerns against a divisive and corrupt Liberal government.
“This is the path forward to a common goal of returning to normalcy while remaining steadfast as proud Canadians. Our core conservative values of hard work, respect, and fairness are what make our party and this country great. It is paramount that we champion these unique traits that make us exceptional.”
Of 118 Conservative MPs who voted during a caucus meeting Wednesday, 73 voted to oust the leader.
Dreeshen did not immediately respond to an Albertan query on whether he voted for or against removing the leader. Dreeshen’s staff said he would be available for further comment Thursday or Friday.
