MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Public participation campaigns put on by Mountain View County and partner stakeholders have seen more than 1,110 attendees so far in 2023, according to a report presented to council on Aug. 9.

In his quarterly report to council, legislative, community and agricultural services direct Chris Atchison updated council on recent activities, including public participation.

Two hundred students and 10 adults took part in the recent Aspen Ranch Farm Safety, Agricultural and Environmental Awareness camp offered to Grade 4 students in partnership with Red Deer County and Clearwater County, he said.

Seven hundred and fifty-plus guests took part in the recent Alberta Air Tour stopover at the Olds-Didsbury Airport, he said.

One hundred people took part in the Grey Wooded Forage Association AGM, forage finished livestock producer panel and dinner at the Heritage Centre outside Cremona, he said.

Seventy-three people attended the recent Greg Judy Grazing School workshop, and 36 people attended the recent Technology and Forage for High Performance field day at Madden.

Meanwhile, county peace officers have patrolled a total of 30,082 kilometres of roadway so far in 2023, initiating 91 traffic stops. Notable speeding stops have included one for 57 km/hour over the posted limit in Bergen, 56 over in Jackson, 55 and 54 over in Wessex, and 52 over in Westerdale.

The county has added a third peace officer and vehicle, council heard.

Atchison also reported on recent economic development strategy projects and activities, including by the Aviation Advisory Committee.

“The committee met to continue their work to create short term development potential at both MVC-owned airports which has resulted in additional lots available at the Sundre Airport and a reconfiguration of lots to make them more marketable at the Olds-Didsbury Airport,” he said.

“Further, the committee has reviewed feedback received from airport users and identified solutions for follow-up in the coming months. Lastly, the committee has begun their work as the steering committee of the Olds-Didsbury Airport Area Structure Plan.”

County staff have been working collaboratively with Alberta Open Farm Days to “promote the event, which is scheduled to take place Aug. 19-20. Once content is developed, this will be heavily advertised on our website and mobile app, all social channels, via the local newspaper, and through various radio campaigns,” he said.

Reeve Angela Aalbers asked Atchison to include a report on filming projects taking place in the district in future quarterly reports.

The Mountain View Film Office (including MVC, Didsbury and Sundre representatives) will be making a presentation at the upcoming Alberta Municipalities Association conference, council heard.

Council accepted Atchison’s report as information.
