MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a snowfall warning Sunday for Mountain View County and nearby urban centres along with other Alberta locales.

Heavy snow, with total snowfall amounts of 10 centimetres (cm) to 20 cm, will begin Sunday night, the federal agency’s 10:33 a.m. April 20 warning for the affected areas said.

Periods of rain will change to wet snow, with up to 10 cm possible in some areas by Monday morning. Heavy snow will continue on Monday, with another 10 cm expected.

The federal agency included Mountain View County near Olds, Didsbury, Carstairs, Water Valley, Cremona and Sundre in the April 20 warning.

Parts of  Rocky View, Clearwater, Brazeau and Yellowhead counties along with portions of the Municipal District of Bighorn were also included in the warning.

“Although uncertainty still remains high with this system, confidence is increasing that areas northwest of Calgary will receive a substantial amount of snow. This snowfall event will end on Monday night,” the warning said.

A snowfall warning is issued in Alberta when 10 cm or more of snow falls within 12 hours or less.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow, the federal agency warned.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.”
