ROCKY VIEW COUNTY – A 19 year old was killed in a collision on Highway 22 north of Cochrane Sunday that forced the closure of the highway for hours.

Cochrane RCMP received a report on July 28 at 01:15 a.m. of a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 22 and Township Road 281 in Rocky View County, police said in a press release issued Sunday.

“Upon arrival, emergency crews observed that a truck hauling a trailer and a small SUV had collided with each other travelling the same direction,” police said.

“The collision between the vehicles occurred when the truck over corrected coming back onto the road surface from the shoulder. First travelling into the southbound lane then back to the northbound lane. The SUV collided with the trailer being pulled,” police said.

The SUV came to rest in the southbound lane.

The truck and trailer came to rest after striking the guard rail and leaving the road surface going into the ditch, police said.

The 19-year-old male driver of the truck was pronounced deceased on scene.

“RCMP express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” police said in the release.

There were three occupants in the SUV – two males and female – all 26 years old from Calgary.

Police said they were all treated for non-life threatening injuries and taken by ground ambulance to hospital.

RCMP were still on scene at nearly 11 a.m. Sunday, conducting the investigation with the support of the collision reconstructionist.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution as police continue to investigate and lane closures will cause delays.
