Warning issued for severe thunderstorm in Mountain View County Monday

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Monday evening for Mountain View County and urban centres near it.

Environment Canada issued an alert at 7:24 p.m. Oct. 28 that said a minute earlier “Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.”

At the time, the thunderstorm was located 20 kilometres west of Didsbury and was moving southeast at 20 kilometres an hour (km/h).

Large hail can damage property and cause injury, the alert noted, adding an advisement to take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

The warning is in effect for Mountain View County near Sundre, Carstairs, Cremona, Water Valley, Didsbury and Olds.

A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when there is evidence based on radar, satellite pictures, or from a reliable spotter that any one or more of the following three weather conditions is imminent or occurring:

• wind gusts of 90 km/h or greater, which could cause structural wind damage;

• hail of two centimetres (cm) or larger in diameter; or

• heavy rainfall.
