Project became controversial when debt limit was expanded to fund it

OLDS — Town staff should be able to move in to the new Operations Centre by late February, director of operations Scott Chant says.

Chant made that prediction during an Olds council policies and priorities meeting.

Chant said construction of the building, located along 70th Avenue just north of Rotary Athletic Park, is now well underway.

The purpose of the $10 million facility is to consolidate staff and equipment from three older buildings into one location.

Once that plan was announced, it became very controversial, because town officials successfully applied to have the municipality's debt limit increased in order to borrow to fund the project.

Chant told councillors that if they go out to that location “you’ll see a hive of activity, of lots of Tonka toys playing in the dirt.”

He said a storm pond was constructed and workers were busy pouring the building’s foundation.

“They’re making good headway now once the weather turned for them and it’s been a little bit nicer,” he said.

Chant said substantial completion of the project – the point at which it will be turned over to the Town of Olds so staff can move in – is projected to be on or about Feb. 26.

“Of course in the spring, there’ll always be landscaping and – you know -- plantings and stuff like that. That’ll have to come back in in the spring. It’s a little tough to plant in February,” Chant said.
