Access for development at highways 2A and 27 planned

A gas bar and convenience food store, planned for the corner of highways 2A and 27 in Olds will eventually include a turning lane on the east end of the property.

A gas bar and convenience food store, planned for the corner of highways 2A and 27 in Olds will eventually include a turning lane on the east end of the property.

But that's up to Alberta Transportation to do, according to Olds chief operating officer Scott Chant.

He also said plans call for right-in, right-out turning lanes in the alley at the west end of the property as well.

Chant made those comments in response to a query from Coun. Wade Bearchell during the July 21 municipal planning commission meeting in town council chambers.

Bearchell thought improvements to the intersection had to be made before development on the property began.

Chant said improvements to 2A and 27 were not a condition laid down in order to approve the development.

“What was part of the condition of the development was allowing an easement on the east side of the property for a right-hand turn bay to be put in at a later date,” Chant said.

“(Alberta) Transportation is responsible for that – for those upgrades. They're not prepared at this time to do that. But part of the condition was that the right-of-way had to be granted.

“The existing entrances that were for the old houses that were there are to be closed and then the back alley to the west of the property will be a right-in/right-out only situation, similar to what's going on down there by the Tim Hortons right now.

“Then joint access between the Town of Olds and this development on the 2A where we have gates going to a gravel pile. Transportation said we needed to share that access and that's the way they could get their old turns off on to 2A,” he added.
