A marijuana production company, one of five planning to set up processing facilities in Olds, is one step closer to operating.

PacWest Canopy Ltd. plans to set up shop on an 11.5-acre lot at 6608-48th Avenue in the south industrial area.

On June 11, after no objections were raised during a public hearing, council passed a bylaw re-designating that land from Light Industrial District to Direct Control 7. This is specific to medicinal marijuana facility use and development.

The Albertan reported last month that the PacWest facility could lead to a potential 75 jobs that would have what company spokesperson Jas Basi called "living wage jobs."

PacWest is just one of five marijuana production companies starting up in Olds, including Terra Life Sciences, which recently celebrated completion of Phase 1 of its medicinal marijuana expansion project.

PacWest has not yet been licensed by Health Canada to produce, sell or distribute marijuana.
