School is back in session as of today. Here, Sophie Pugh receives a stamp from Kelly Frere for completing a section of the school bus safety session.

Today is the first day of school for many students in Olds.

As a result, RCMP plan to be out in full force to make sure those kids get to and from school safely.

Police always see an increase in traffic-related complaints as kids begin going back to school and/or parents drop them off.

"You will see Olds RCMP out enforcing speeds in the school zones and educating the public that school is back in and for the safety of our children, they will need to remain vigilant in the school zone areas," Olds RCMP Cpl. Courtney Harding says.

Harding has some safety tips for people as school gets back in session:

Drivers
* Be aware of the posted school zones and the hours they're in effect. For Olds this is 8 a.m to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 pm.

* Never pass a bus that is stopped, as it could be loading or unloading children.
* Do not block crosswalks.
* Yield to pedestrians.

Pedestrians
* Always use a marked crosswalk. Stop and look both ways before entering the roadway.
* Walk on the sidewalk, not the road.
* While waiting for a bus stand away from the roadway.

Bike riders
* Wear a helmet.
* Walk your bike across the road in crosswalk areas.
* Be alert for vehicles and pedestrians.
* Check that your bike has reflectors.

Parents

* Ensure you and your child are aware of the route your child is taking to school and any pickup or drop-off times. Several times each year RCMP receive complaints from worried parents about children not being where they should be.

* Take note of what your child is wearing before they go to school. This will help police and other concerned parties find children if  they get lost.
