Holy Trinity Catholic School Grade 4 student Christian Murphy attempts to identify different types of soil and sand by dipping his hand into a container and grabbing some during an agricultural presentation at the school.

We may have some new farmers in Olds and area, thanks to the Classroom Agriculture Society program.

Earlier this year, under that program, Marlow Currie, a professional agrologist and former farmer came to Holy Trinity Catholic School to teach Grade 4 students about agriculture.

"Marlow Currie was our 'soil expert' who came in and taught us all about the importance of soil and growing crops," teacher Jennifer Sanderson says.

"The kids really enjoy hands-on experiences," she adds.

Currie brought in soil samples to teach students the difference between three types of soil (sandy, clay and topsoil).

It was a success.

Several children asked Currie about  careers in agriculture.

"The students were excited and are now more interested in agriculture," Sanderson says.
