Olds College (OC) has once again been recognized on a national level for its programs and applied research.

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) named Olds College for two honours during its annual Awards of Excellence luncheon May 1 in Ottawa.

OC received the bronze level CICan Program of Excellence award for its hospitality and tourism management program.

OC also received a bronze level Applied Research and Innovation Excellence award for work undertaken by the Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI).

ìIt is truly an honour to once again have our efforts recognized by CICan,î Olds College vice-president of academic and research Jason Dewling says.

ìWe are competing with colleges and polytechnics across the nation for these awards, and to be recognized among the top colleges in the nation speaks to the excellence of the faculty and staff members who continue to strive for brilliance.î

The hospitality and tourism management program was transferred from Red Deer College to Olds College in 2013. Since then, staff have transformed the program to increase accessibility through the use of technology, and to embrace the Olds College culture of hands-on learning.

ìWith the aid of technology and flexible delivery, we have increased the variety of teaching styles in the way we engage with the students,î hospitality and tourism instructor Bob van Someren says.

ìThis includes inquiry-based block delivery, a unique, accelerated 15-month diploma program, and creating a dual credit option for high school students.î

The Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) was recently named one of Canada's Top 50 Research Colleges, and has partnerships in the areas of agriculture (crop and livestock management), turfgrass, apparel, meat processing, water quality and wetlands, and entrepreneurship.
