Columbarium rates in the Olds Cemetery have risen.
During its May 28 meeting, town council passed an amendment allowing a hike in the rate due to the purchase of a second columbarium by the Olds Royal Canadian Legion branch. The new rates took effect June 1.
The branch, in tandem with the town cemetery administrator, says there there will be a rate increase of $350 to purchase a niche in the Field of Honour columbarium. The new rate is $900.
The town collects the money on behalf of the Olds Royal Canadian Legion branch.
The town gives the Legion the right to install columbarium units within the Field of Honour, which is set aside for veterans in the cemetery.
Additionally, the responsibilities of purchasing, maintenance and repair of the columbarium and setting the rates fall on the Legion.
