OLDS — Town council has agreed to provide $1,000 to organizers of this year’s Olds College fundraiser.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the fundraiser, called A Celebration of Alberta Ag, will be held virtually April 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature a special appearance by well-known Albertan country entertainer Corb Lund.
The show, streamed live, will showcase Alberta’s agriculture industry and its important role not only in the community and province, but also in the world.
Promotional material from the college says the evening will also “showcase our hands-on program offering and student experience, celebrate our industry partners, and as always, help to bring awareness and raise funds for student bursaries.”
When the matter came up for discussion during town council’s Feb. 22 meeting, community services director Doug Wagstaff noted that $1,000 is pretty close to the amount the town has given annually to support Olds College fundraisers. That figure has ranged from $1,200 to $1,500.
Wagstaff noted that previously, the fundraiser was a formal gala. Then a couple of years ago, it became a Homestead Feast. Now, it has morphed again into a celebration of the Alberta agriculture industry.
“This is a typical thing that we do every year, so very excited to throw support to the Olds College, our biggest partner in the town of Olds,” Mayor Michael Muzychka said.
