Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) can help protect businesses and residences, according to Carolyn McTighe, RCMP crime prevention liaison for southern Alberta.
McTighe spoke at the RCMP’s crime prevention presentation on April 23 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #105 in Olds, sponsored by the Olds and District Chamber of Commerce.
The physical environment around a business or home can invite or deter criminal activity and will influence the risk versus gain subconscious assessment by a potential criminal. A physical environment that positively influences human behaviour will deter negative activity.
Strategic placement of trees, shrubs, lights, cameras, and window coverings can help prevent crime. Derelict buildings attract graffiti and vandalism.
The event, which attracted 25, included Olds RCMP Staff Sgt. Warren Wright, Const. Mitch Price and Olds Fire Department Chief Juston Andrew who is also the Town of Olds' director of protective services.
