Drive-thru coffee shop project in Olds nixed

Project would have seen old car wash building converted into a drive-thru and sit-down coffee shop

OLDS — A proposal to convert an old car wash building into a drive-thru and sit-down coffee shop is officially dead, says Scott Chant, the town’s operations director.

Chant made that statement during the town’s March 18 municipal planning commission (MPC) meeting, held via Zoom.

A proposal by applicant/owner Michael Reynolds/Adelphia Holdings to convert the old Shell car wash building, located near the corner of 57th Avenue and Highway 27 had come to MPC’s January meeting.

Commissioners gave it tentative approval under eight conditions.

The applicant said the conditions made the proposal too unworkable, so they announced plans to drop the idea.

That spurred commissioners to drop one of the conditions during their February meeting because they want to encourage economic development in the community.

It called for an exit-only sign to be installed at the northeast access point of the property to facilitate traffic flow.

During MPC’s March 8 meeting, Coun. Mary Jane Harper asked if the coffee shop project will go ahead.

"They did come back to us and they still are not going to proceed. The project is not going to happen,” Chant said.

“They appreciated MPC’s time for the consideration but they still felt that it was not going to happen. It’s done.”

“OK, we’ve done our best,” Harper said.

MPC chair Rudy Durieux thanked Chant for the update.
