Driver of truck involved in multiple crashes pleads guilty to careless driving

A 36-year-old Olds man has pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving under the Traffic Safety Act in connection to an incident on March 18 where a pickup truck drove into two parked vehicles on 61 Avenue.

A 36-year-old Olds man has pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving under the Traffic Safety Act in connection to an incident on March 18 where a pickup truck drove into two parked vehicles on 61 Avenue.Calvin Zimmerman made the plea in Didsbury court on July 30 and received a sentence of a 90-day driving suspension and a $2,000 fine.The Crown withdrew criminal charges against Zimmerman relating to the incident including two counts of failing to remain at the scene of a collision, driving while impaired and driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.80 milligrams.Crown lawyer Dane Rolfe said the criminal charges were withdrawn because of difficulties in proving impairment or a deliberate decision to leave the scene of the collision.Police said a white Chevrolet pickup truck heading north on 61 Avenue struck a 2009 Toyota Yaris parked on the east side of the road near 53 Street and then struck a silver 2004 Pontiac Sunfire parked in front of the Yaris at about 11 p.m. on March 18.The collision caused significant damage to the vehicles but no one was injured, police said.The truck's front passenger-side tire was torn off in the collision and police arrested the truck's driver a short time later outside the Tread Pro Tire Centre on Highway 27.Rolfe said the driving suspension took effect immediately and the sentence Zimmerman received was the maximum allowed for that [email protected]
