OLDS — Town officials are encouraging residents to participate in a fun competition during Random Acts of Kindness Week, which runs from Feb. 12 – 18.

The week culminates with Random Act of Kindness Day on Friday, Feb. 17, which is a day to recognize, celebrate, and encourage kind acts across the globe and in Olds.

The town’s community services department has created a Random Acts of Kindness bingo card for residents to participate in a fun and friendly competition and a chance to win prizes for their acts of kindness.

It's a way to shake off the effects of two years of social distancing and sheltering at home due to the global pandemic.

“It’s no secret that the last two years have been particularly challenging for Canadians, so why not celebrate a day that encourages good deeds to lift the spirits of those around us,” Heather Dixon, the town’s lead community facilitator, says in a news release.

“There is evidence that performing kind acts for others is linked to increased feelings of happiness and positivity and can even encourage those who witness kind acts to repeat what they see.

“With that in mind, let’s inspire kindness and promote thoughtfulness in our communities today and every day.”

Random Acts of Kindness Bingo cards can be downloaded from the Town of Olds website at www.olds.ca/aok as well as obtained at various places throughout the community.

There are cards for students, seniors, and the community in general.

Activities on the cards are simple acts of kindness to carry out, such as donating something to someone in need, helping someone carry something, or buying a coffee for someone.

Once you have completed the activities on the card, it can be submitted to the town office for a chance to win prizes in each category. Details are at www.olds.ca/aok.

“Olds residents are encouraged to participate in Random Acts of Kindness week and make Olds the ‘Kindest Town in the West.’” the news release says.
