A very welcome bit of nature has appeared in the Garden Centre at the Olds Canadian Tire store.

A robin who has been named Ruby has built a nest and laid some eggs in one of the hanging baskets on display, above the shrubs for sale. The young ones — four in all — have now hatched.

They're a big hit, says Lesia Asaris, who co-owns the Olds Canadian Tire outlet with her husband Mike.

"The customers love Ruby," she says. "A lot of customers take photos of her."

Like other animals, mother birds can be pretty aggressive and protective when people are near their young, but to date, things have gone well, Asaris says.

"So far, Ruby has been calm and friendly," she says. "She hasn't dive-bombed anybody, so she's playing nice there."
Asaris says they've never had a bird build a nest and lay eggs in the Garden Centre before "but it's a beautiful place to do so."
