The Olds Fire Department says it needs to replace its inventory of self-contained breathing apparatuses.

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is a piece of equipment that delivers breathable air to the wearer. It is used in cases where atmospheric conditions are categorized as Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health. Such toxic environments can result from structure, vehicle, grass and garbage fires.

Olds' fire department is one of three in the county that need to replace their SCBA. The others are Cremona and Didsbury.

"We have packs right now where we simply can't buy parts so we're Frankensteining other packs," Olds fire Chief Lorne Thompson told Olds council's policies and priorities committee.

New SCBAs would have a 15-year lifespan, with a warranty that covers that entire period.

Fire departments within the county recommend a single, regional purchase to take advantage of bulk pricing.

Thompson said they could save $400 per pack, judging from quotes received.

The total cost of replacing SCBAs for Cremona, Didsbury, Olds, Sundre and Carstairs would be $765,667.84.

The Town of Olds' inventory would cost $230,987. Thompson said Mountain View County has agreed to halve the cost toward each fire department's purchase.

"They last longer than (15 years). The problem is they don't make parts anymore." LORNE THOMPSON, Olds Fire Chief
