Olds firefighters responded to a house fire on Family Day.

The call came in at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20. The fire was in a single-family residence in the 5100 block of 44th Street.

When they got there, fire crews discovered smoke and flames in one room of the home, which was unoccupied.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Fire damage was contained to one room. However, there's smoke damage throughout the home.

"The town of Olds Fire Department credits the quick-thinking neighbour who heard the fire alarm coming from the home and called 911," a fire department news release says.

"The fire department also credits the wise decision of the neighbour - who had a key to the unoccupied home - for resisting the urge to enter the house and for waiting outside the structure until fire crews arrived."
