Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a two-vehicle head-on collision east of Sundre on Friday morning, say RCMP.

Five people were injured, including two seriously, when a westbound pickup truck collided with an eastbound minivan about 12 kilometres east of Sundre shortly before 3 a.m.

The 19-year-old male driver of the pickup, who is a Sundre resident, and the 25-year-old driver of the van, who is from Bowden, were both transported to Calgary by STARS in serious condition. Two females in the pickup, age 22 and 26, and the 35-year-old male passenger in the van received minor injuries. No names had been released Monday.

Debris from the crash was spread over a large area of the highway, which remained closed until midday Friday.

RCMP Sgt. Percy Leipnitz said Monday that the investigation is continuing and police have not yet determined if charges will be laid.
