OLDS — A total of $4,000 from the Chic & Billie Miller Endowment Fund was distributed to five local groups during a church service and ceremony July 28 at the Olds United Church.

Groups receiving money were Threads of Kindness, So Grateful to Sew Quilters, the Community Lending Shelf, the Mountain View Hospice Society (MVHS) and the Olds & Area Pregnancy Support Centre.

Unfortunately, no representative of the MVHS was on hand to receive their cheque.

Rev. Lynn McKinnon, minister for the Olds United Church and Knox United Church in Didsbury, introduced the recipients.  Mayor Judy Dahl distributed the cheques.

Chic Miller was a successful Olds businessman. Upon his death in 2005, he left a legacy that was deposited at the United Church Foundation in Toronto. The fund was set up via the United Church of Canada.

It was requested that the mayor of the day distribute the money.

Applicants are evaluated on community involvement and benefits, innovative and/or unique attributes, if the project will benefit more than one sector of the community, and if the applicants have obtained other financial support for the project.

As the ceremony ended, Dahl praised the groups for the work they do in the community. She said the fund “has to carry on.”
