OLDS — Consultation was held Thursday on a plan to renovate the empty former Town of Olds operations building on the east side of Olds into a community hub for socializing, projects and the arts.

The Town of Olds recently announced the creation of two new community spaces in its building at 4826 51st Street: a Men’s Shed and a community arts hub.

Residents were invited to learn more about them during a public engagement session on Sept. 19 at the building.

It was billed as an opportunity to learn more about the two new initiatives, provide feedback, and discover how to be involved in them.

The municipality announced the two new spaces in a news release issued Sept. 9.

“The Men's Shed, part of an international movement, offers a casual, supportive space where men can connect, socialize, and work on meaningful projects,” the news release says.

“It is designed to reduce isolation, build friendships and enhance the mental health and well-being of men in our community.

“Each Men's Shed is unique to its community, reflecting the interests and skills of its members, from woodworking and metalworking to gardening, cooking or bike repair.”

The municipality says the community arts hub will “provide a vibrant space for local artists to gather, create, and share their talents through various projects, programs, and cultural events.

“It will also serve as a place for community members to engage in arts creation, appreciate art, and participate in other cultural activities that enrich our town.”

“The Town of Olds is committed to repurposing this facility to benefit all residents for activities that promote social connections and relationships,” the news release adds.

“These two new initiatives aim to foster community connection, creativity, and mental well-being through shared activities and a welcoming environment.”

“We believe this new space will significantly impact our community by providing a place for connection, creativity, and collaboration,” Lorrie O’Brien, director of community services said in a prepared statement. “It's about more than just a building; it's about building community.”

“This project is a fantastic opportunity for us to come together, support each other, and enhance our community’s well-being,” Town of Olds Mayor Judy Dahl also says in the release.

“We look forward to seeing how this space will evolve with input from our residents.”
