Beginning Feb. 5, garbage collection crews in Bowden will only pick up trash from the front of residential and business properties.

At its Jan. 27 meeting, Bowden council unanimously approved a request from town staff to change garbage pickup locations from the town’s alleys to the front portion of properties and the change will remain in effect until further notice.

Normally, garbage bins are collected from the alleys running behind homes and businesses but the large amount of snow that has fallen in the area this winter has made travel along Bowden’s alleys challenging and dangerous for the town’s garbage trucks.

"This has forced us to abandon driving down most of our alleys with our own garbage truck during weekly garbage collection runs," states a report from town staff presented to Bowden council at the Jan. 27 meeting. "This is due to the fact that we get constantly stuck due to the size and weight of this vehicle.

"The challenges of trying to drive our garbage truck down the alleys will only increase as the weather warms up and the condition of the alleys continues to deteriorate more rapidly with melting and continuing to try and drive the truck through these soft alleys, which will also create significant ruts."

Because the alleys are impassible for the town’s garbage truck, Bowden’s public works staff are using smaller vehicles for trash collection and this change has meant increased collection times and a need to handle garbage twice in the collection process.
