Members of the public are invited to help celebrate the Olds Municipal Library’s 60th anniversary on Thursday, June 6.

Residents are urged to drop by with the family at 3 p.m. during the afternoon open house for goodies and games.

At 6 p.m., there will be a short ceremony and official cake-cutting and an open mic so people can share their best library stories.

"Has the library impacted you? Let us know," says Tammy L. Nischuk, who looks after marketing for the library.

As a special way to say thank you to their patrons, library staff are offering free membership cards to Olds-area citizens this year.

"Stop by to get your free library card and consider a donation of whatever you can afford to help us continue our amazing legacy of public service," Nischuk says.

The very first public library board in Olds was appointed in December 1958. It consisted of the mayor and a group of enthusiastic citizens who wanted to see literacy thrive in the community.

On June 6, 1959 the former post office opened its doors as the Olds library’s first location. Membership cards were advertised as $1 for individuals and $1.50 for families.

During the last 60 years, countless books have been loaned to residents, visitors and students.

Olds library offers free internet, delivers books to our local seniors' lodges, hosts free kids' programs and connects library patrons to more than seven million books in the province of Alberta.

"Simply stated, we offer a space for the community to create their future. People come here to connect, share and learn. And it’s all thanks to the hard work of the town of Olds and the people who care about literacy," Nischuk says.
