The building at 5010-50 Ave. that was home to the former Armstrong Bakery and now houses the Different Strokes art gallery was designated as a municipal historic resource by town council during its Oct. 28 meeting.
It is the 10th municipal historic resource that has been designated by the town.
Henry Sonnenberg, the building’s owner, said he was pleased council decided to designate the building.
"I think it’s a good thing to protect the entire block," he said in an interview following the decision.
Sonnenberg applied for the designation over a year ago. The roof has been restored and he said he also plans to refinish the outside of the building to restore it to the condition it was in during the 1920s.
Now that the building has been designated by the town as a municipal historic resource, Sonnenberg can apply for matching funds from the provincial government’s municipal heritage program to make improvements to the building’s character-defining elements.
