A police investigation into a two-vehicle collision four kilometres east of Olds last month that killed three people and sent four others to hospital has ended with no new answers about what caused the crash.

Just before 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, a white Acura SUV driven by an Olds woman and a red Ford Freestar carrying six men from the Red Deer area ranging in age from 19 to 33 collided head-on on Highway 27 near Rge. Rd. 12.

The crash killed Donna Mills, the Acura’s driver who was returning home from work, along with the driver and a rear passenger in the Freestar.

Three other passengers in the Freestar were taken to Calgary's Foothills Medical Centre—two by STARS Air Ambulance and one by ground ambulance—with critical and potentially life-threatening injuries.

A fourth man was brought to the Olds Hospital and Care Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

All of the surviving passengers recovered from their injuries.

In a media release issued on Feb. 11, the Olds RCMP stated although there were indications following the crash that the Freestar, which was travelling east, had veered into the westbound lane where the Acura was travelling westbound, such indications "have not been conclusively verified by the investigation."

The "direct causes" of the crash, the release states, "are not known."

"Several factors may have contributed however without direct evidence it would be speculation to suggest any one or combination of them were involved."

At the time of the crash, police said weather conditions were clear when the collision happened and alcohol was not suspected as a factor.

The six occupants of the Freestar involved in the crash were labourers who were carrying out work on the new Sunrise Encore retirement facility located at the intersection of 57 Avenue and Vista Drive in Olds.
