OLDS — A test undertaken throughout town to find out where unwanted water is getting into sewer system found leaks at 36 different locations, affecting both private properties and municipal land.

Those leaks are categorized into five types: issues with manhole covers, improper grading of the surrounding land, leaks in the service lines, problems at service connections, and missing or broken cleanout caps.

“The data shows that these leaks would be having a noticeable impact on our total inflow volumes," a town news release issued Nov. 23 said.

Council was told this week that those leaks could cost the town about $2.3 million.

Vapour testing was undertaken Sept. 13-26 to find out where the leaks were occurring.

Town staff are now working with landowners to deal with them.

“Repair strategies will be determined through consultation with the landowners, potentially involving manhole repairs, service repairs, pipe relining, and site grading where necessary,” the release said.

The town says the vapour testing is “a proactive step (that) allows us to identify and address any issues early, ensuring the system remains safe and functions effectively.

“This is especially important as underground lines experience strain over time. Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity of our sewer infrastructure, particularly as it ages.”

The release said further investigation will be carried out in any “inconclusive areas.”
